Timor Est Cristo Liurai

-> Coming at the end of the month!

We are now in our fifth year of partnership with the Cristo Liurai community, still led by Luis Santos de Jesus (who continues to work as a school teacher during the day). Luis and the members of this community exemplify the potential of Timor-Leste’s emerging specialty coffee sector, thanks to the right combination of investment in materials, processing training, and strong leadership. Today, Cristo Liurai has 24 members, a number that has slowly grown over the years as more farmers in the area seek better opportunities to maximize their income through the processing of high-quality parchment.

Luis’s meticulous approach to processing has gradually spread to other community members, who now keep written records of drying times and the moisture content of their parchment. This process has been further facilitated by Karst, with the purchase of a new moisture meter (financed by green coffee sales from the 2023 harvest), made available exclusively to the members of Cristo Liurai. This has allowed for greater autonomy and an improved ability to process coffee according to the strict standards required of our partner farmers. Fortunately, the 2024 harvest benefited from more favorable weather conditions compared to the previous two years in Letefoho, with average drying times for the community ranging between 7 and 9 days, reaching a final moisture content of 10%.

Cupper's notes

Cupper's notes

It releases a lively, bright acidity, with fresh notes of green apple that provide a juicy and refreshing sensation. The body is medium and smooth, enveloping the palate. Sweet nuances emerge elegantly, with hints of roasted hazelnut adding depth and a pleasant roundness, while raisin completes the profile with an intense and slightly caramelized sweetness.

The finish is persistent and harmonious, leaving a balanced sweetness that invites another sip.

Although Karst has now provided all 24 members of this group with the necessary materials to process their own coffee, the work is not yet complete. Looking ahead, Karst will encourage Luis and his community to focus on coffee tree rehabilitation activities and plans to establish Cristo Liurai’s first coffee seedling nursery, as seedlings have so far been transported from the nursery of Maun Simao de Deus, Karst’s Field Manager. Through this initiative, Karst is confident in increasing the average cherry yield per hectare and ultimately continuing to improve household incomes.
